Addressing Whiteness in Counselor Education

Addressing Whiteness in Counselor Education

Presenters: Scott Schaefle PhD, NCC, LMHC, LMFT & Krista Malott PhD, LPC

Ways in which Whiteness is embedded in counselor education can get in the way of anti-racist and inclusion efforts. Faculty and students may lack understanding of ways in which their own whiteness and embedded whiteness in the program can operate. Addressing Whiteness in Counselor Education continues to be a controversial and difficult task, particularly given the backlash efforts across the nation at silencing antiracism and decolonizing efforts. In this webinar, we will use discussion and the sharing of specific lived experiences and educational practices to illustrate tactics in naming and critically interrogating Whiteness. Examination of structures, colleague supports (or lack thereof), and classroom hot moments will be included. Such work will be presented with a culturally humble lens, in recognizing the many intersectional complexities, and learned white supremacy, that impacts us all.

Also, we seek to establish an international network where counseling trainers across the world can collaborate to produce antiracist scholarship and strengthen their antiracist identity.

Chinese live and work in more than two-thirds of the countries in the world. The mental health needs of the Chinese people in various social settings have been highlighted in the literature. The number of Chinese mental health counselors (CMHC) is slowly growing in countries where mental health counseling training is available. Despite the growing trend, CMHCs remain largely disconnected from each other by space and time. This TCR Roundtable webinar seeks to connect Mandarin-speaking CMHCs across the world for networking and solidarity and to celebrate the good work happening in different Chinese communities. The webinar will be conducted in Mandarin featuring three Mandarin-speaking MHCs (mainland China, Malaysia, and United States) who will share their work among Chinese in their respective communities. Participants will also have the opportunity to network with peers from various countries.

Presenters: Dr. S Anandavalli, Dr. Christian Chan & Dr. John Harrichand

Moderator: Dr. Kok-Mun Ng

The success of the movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” has generated a lot of buzz in the film industry and social media about the impact of the movie in highlighting the lack and importance of Asian cultural representation in film making, social discourse, and social justice in a multicultural society such as the U.S. Counselor educators have noted the usefulness of using movies in facilitating learning of specific counseling concepts and skills. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” presents a wonderful vehicle in current pop culture for counselors to increase their knowledge on the Chinese culture, immigrant experience, and relationships. A panel of speakers with Asian heritage backgrounds will offer their critique and examination of the cultural elements in the movie story. Participants will be invited to reflect, discuss, and examine ways in which the movie story can be used to inform and facilitate their work with clients who may resonate with the story and its characters.

What does counseling have to do with the environment? Come join us in an in-depth conversation with Dr. Debbie C. Sturm on the topic!

The climate crisis is predicted to have a profound impact on the mental health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities, with our most vulnerable neighbors being at an elevated risk. This impact includes depression, anxiety, PTSD and pre-traumatic stress, fear, eco-grief, irritability, anger, violence, and loneliness, as well as disease spread, heatstroke, lung disease, heart disease, suicidal ideation, and premature death. The effects of climate change on community mental health and wellbeing are already taking place globally and locally. In addition to making the connection between the climate crisis and mental health, participants will explore how the ACA Advocacy Competencies create a pathway for everyone to find their personal form of advocacy and leadership in the areas of climate change, environmental justice, and climate justice. The presenter’s personal journey and the outcomes of the work will provide context.

The Common Table is a fast-paced, “open mic”-style event featuring creative ideas to current challenges in counselor education and supervision. Presenters are asked to share their work in under 4 minutes.

Yup, 4 minutes.

Presentations are short and to the point, but allow for individuals to share something exciting and innovative they’re working on within the counseling profession. By design, these are conversation starters (appe-teasers!) and quick snapshots in time of an idea, framework, or project that folks are working on! Works-in-progress are actually encouraged! Because the time is so brief and structured, everyone will be strongly encouraged to continue discussing ideas offline and/or potentially be brought back to share in one of our longer format events!
