Short Bio

My name is Jared Lau, I am a faculty member in counselor education (CED) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). My role in the CED program has largely shifted over the years as I have taken on larger administrative and service/leadership responsibilities. However, one area of my service that I genuinely enjoy is supporting and advocating for newer/junior faculty in the department towards their successful matriculation through academia via retention, promotion, and tenure. I try to accomplish this through a number of ways, including scholarly collaborations, peer-reviewing teaching materials, regular formal and informal meetings, and simply trying to be as supportive in ways that work best for them. I hope to be able to provide some or all of this for you as well wherever you are in your journey.

Summer Writing Collaborative Focus

My areas of interest in working with new professionals include the doctoral student and new faculty socialization process, as well as centering on conversations where I represent my multiple identities and communities to include (but not limited to) BIPOC students and faculty concerns, first-generation college students, and student affairs/administration. From a stricter research standpoint perspective, my general research agenda can be described as multicultural and ecological counseling and development. Through this agenda, I attempt to apply ecological theory to various aspects of counseling and counselor education, and also attempt to integrate all of my research through the broader multicultural and social justice counseling competencies.
